Korea’s largest indoor tennis air dome opens in Gwangju

A landmark project combining advanced air dome technology, refined architectural design, and growing trust in DUOL solutions across the Korean market.

DUOL has successfully completed tennis airdome in Gwangju, one of the largest indoor tennis facilities in East Asia and the largest of its kind in Korea.

With a total covered area exceeding 9,500 m², the structure accommodates 12 indoor tennis courts and represents a major step forward in the development of large-scale sports infrastructure in the region.

A distinctive architectural form defining the new tennis air dome in Gwangju

What immediately sets this project apart is its architectural presence. The air dome is not treated as a purely functional structure, but as a recognizable urban landmark. The clean curvature, combined with a carefully designed graphic membrane pattern, gives the building a strong visual identity and a contemporary character.

The result is a structure that does not simply cover space, but defines it — creating a clear architectural signature within the urban environment.

Advanced Membrane Engineering

At the core of the structure is DUOL’s innovative ECO membrane system, developed through decades of engineering and continuous innovation.

The multi-layer membrane system eliminates thermal bridges and ensures high insulation performance, while the patented 1+1 system introduces a dual-layer configuration that improves structural stability and long-term reliability.

The interior is designed with a high level of precision. The membrane remains smooth and wrinkle-free, and all technical systems, including lighting and cabling, are fully integrated and concealed, resulting in a clean and uninterrupted architectural space.

The air dome incorporates DUOL Skylight membrane technology, allowing natural daylight to penetrate deep into the structure. This creates a bright and evenly lit environment while reducing the need for artificial lighting and improving overall energy efficiency.

Engineering Systems and Smart Operation

From an engineering perspective, the structure integrates advanced systems for stability, safety, and long-term operation.

Multiple independent inflation units, backup power systems, and real-time monitoring ensure uninterrupted performance even under demanding conditions.

The design is supported by DUOL SmartDome technology, enabling automated control of pressure, ventilation, temperature, and energy consumption, ensuring optimal performance throughout the lifecycle of the structure.

Growing Trust in the Korean Market

The new tennis air dome is part of a broader trend in Korea, where air-supported structures are increasingly adopted for large-span sports facilities.

Built on previous successful references, this project confirms growing trust in DUOL’s engineering, technology, and long-term support. Several new projects are already in development, further strengthening DUOL’s presence in the region.

The official opening was attended by local authorities, including the Mayor of Gwangju, along with representatives of regional institutions.

Projects demonstrate a clear direction in modern construction — combining performance, efficiency, and architectural quality in a single solution.
